FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA- Southern Utah football has their conference opener against Northern Arizona where they take a tough loss 31-23 stretching their winless record to 0-4.

The thunderbirds got off to a slow start as they were scoreless within the first 15 minutes leaving the Lumberjacks with a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter. Going into the second quarter ,quarterback Chris Helbig rushed into the endzone tying up the score. Before halftime, Helbig left the game with a shoulder injury and backup Aaron Zwahlen had to take over.

In the third quarter, the Thunderbirds finally had things rolling with a quick drive a score by running back Jay Green tying the score at 14-14. On the next drive Kicker Manny Berz split the upright making it a 17-14 lead for SUU.

After a tying field goal by the Lumberjacks making it 17-17, tight end Nick Colson found the endzone from a pass from Zwahlen taking the lead back 23-17 after a blocked extra point.

From there on the Lumberjacks took over scoring two more unanswered touchdowns leading them to their 31-23 victory.

After the Thunderbirds bye this week you can catch them at Eastern Washington University on October 6 where they look to get their first win against the Eagles.

In my opinion when looking at al the work a college athlete does not only for their school but for thei team, I feel as if they should be paid. My main reasoning for this is the amount of money teams make for their school. When you break it down college athletes are putting in over 40 hours of work a week dedicated to school and athletics. When considering this, I feel as if student athletes deserve at least some sort of wager.

If I was the athletic director for a day I would make multiple changes. First I would want to increase facilities for athletes, this starts with changing our football field into a bowl with no track. Secondly I would find a way to increase the semester check that the athletes receive because I’ve witnessed first hand how hard it is to live off of that money when other schools even in the big sky get three times the amount we receive. Lastly I would get all new gear and uniforms for all the teams to keep updated. These things would also help our school with recruiting so we would e better throughout the years.

Someday when I have a kid I will 100%let him pay football if that is what he wants to do. Even though there are some studies that show football can restrict brain development, there are also multiple positive factors. First off with the rules of football constantly changing i’m sure by the time my son will be playing it will be a lot safer and many many technological advances in the game to keep players from head injuries. Also, I want my child to experience how it feels to be apart of a team and learn many life skills while playing the game to make him a better person overall.

CEDAR CITY,UTAH- After a two-and-a-half-hour weather delay Thursday, The women’s soccer team of southern Utah faced of against their UNLV opponent where they  came out with a 2-0 victory.

The game was located at Southern Utah University on Thursday, August 23, on a cloudy 81 degree day. The Thunderbirds were 0-2 coming into the match but took a quick lead within the first ten minutes of the game with a goal from Taylor Harris assisted by Devri Hartle and another goal by MaKenzie Lawrence which was unassisted, Although Coach Fred Thompson was happy with the win, he stated that the team need to learn how to “handle” the lead better.

In my opinion when it comes to cheer leading it is not a sport. When we say this we have to break down the topic of what makes a sport a sport. In my opinion a sport is when two team are competing against one another doing something that requires physical activity. In cheer they do not compete against other teams so it wouldn’t be fair to categorize it as a sport. That does not mean that i think what they do is easy, it definitely takes skill to d what they do.

When thinking of my most memorable professional sports moment it is a hard decision due to the fact that living in southern California we have not had a pro football team until recently. That being said I will have to chose from a game that I have seen on television. Out of all the games I have watched, the one that stands out in particular is when the Giants came back to beat the Patriots in the super bowl on their undefeated season. Now this being said, my family and I are very big Patriot fans so saying this is my most memorable game does not mean it is my favorite. At the time I was young and I just simply remember most of that game and the way I was feeling during it when the Giants started making a comeback. It is a game that I will never forget.

When trying to consider my favorite coach, I definitely have a vast variety of options to choose from due to the fact that I have been playing athletics for most of my life. That being said one coach by far stands out to me as the best and that would have to be my dad. Growing up, my dad was my youth baseball and football coach for almost every year as a kid. This statement of my dad being my favorite coach may sound like a very basic answer to most people yet there is a reason for it. My dad has basically taught me everything I know about playing sports and what kind of mentality to play them with. Without him by my side growing up I know for sure I wouldn’t be the athlete I am today and certainly wouldn’t be where I am at. The reason I feel as if he was such a great coach in my eyes would be the fact that he was a simply a role model of mine growing up. I looked up to him and wanted to be just like him when I grew up.

When considering my greatest athletic achievement, there are many things that I would have to think about due to my long history of competitive sports. Yet, there is definitely one that stands out the most to me out of my 15 years experience. By far my most Favorited accomplishment would have to be earning a division 1 football scholarship to play football here at SUU. The reason I chose this is because all those years of working hard and playing was ultimately supposed to lead me to this point of my dream of playing college football, and to get to see that dream come to reality is definitely a humbling experience.
