FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA- Southern Utah football has their conference opener against Northern Arizona where they take a tough loss 31-23 stretching their winless record to 0-4.
The thunderbirds got off to a slow start as they were scoreless within the first 15 minutes leaving the Lumberjacks with a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter. Going into the second quarter ,quarterback Chris Helbig rushed into the endzone tying up the score. Before halftime, Helbig left the game with a shoulder injury and backup Aaron Zwahlen had to take over.
In the third quarter, the Thunderbirds finally had things rolling with a quick drive a score by running back Jay Green tying the score at 14-14. On the next drive Kicker Manny Berz split the upright making it a 17-14 lead for SUU.
After a tying field goal by the Lumberjacks making it 17-17, tight end Nick Colson found the endzone from a pass from Zwahlen taking the lead back 23-17 after a blocked extra point.
From there on the Lumberjacks took over scoring two more unanswered touchdowns leading them to their 31-23 victory.
After the Thunderbirds bye this week you can catch them at Eastern Washington University on October 6 where they look to get their first win against the Eagles.
